"Help Me Help Myself" by ontheblog

Looking around the packed Saturday night house for Help Me, Help
Myself, I felt nervous, even though I wasn’t on stage myself I could
feel the queasy excitement as the lights went down. How would New
Yorkers react to seeing themselves parodied on stage? Would they
sympathize with Becky, struggling to make it as a waitress cum actress
cum guru? Would they laugh? Would they get it?

They did.

The audience cracked up. They especially responded to the
rose-drenched, Sting-backed yoga, Sarah and Ben’s Buffy/Spike banter,
Claire confronting Nevin and he telling her to just shut up. The
woman sitting in front of me had a particularly crackling laugh and I
heard her gasp distinctly when Julie, as Beckie, broke into tears
crying “she sucks, she sucks, Beckie sucks…”

Ah theatre.

In brand-spanking new news (is old news still news?), On the Leesh is
beginning to workshop playwright Daria Polatin’s new full-length screenplay entitled Happen to Know. Stay tuned!
